Pipelines are the most efficient and economical means of transporting oil and gas from where it is extracted to where it will be processed and consumed. Pipeline transport is the transportation of goods or material through a pipe. The best data, in 2014, gives a total of slightly less than 3.5 million km of pipeline in 120 countries of the world.

As Oil & Gas Production continues developing in new and changing areas, the pipeline infrastructure needed to transport various petroleum products continues to expand in order to get the product to market. Europe continues to invest heavily in natural gas transmission infrastructure to diversify sources and routes, while the growing economies of Asia demand more petroleum products in new locations.
In North America, transmission infrastructure is being built to prevent regional oil & gas bottlenecks and allow production to increase from U.S. shale plays and the Canadian Oil Sands.
